Jaliya Wickramasuriya is a Sri Lankan businessman who currently serves as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to the United States and Mexico. He has served as Ambassador since July 28, 2008.[1] Wickramasuriya previously served as Consul General of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in Los Angeles, California.
He was the managing director of family-run Ceylon Royal Tea a tea exporting firm in Sri Lanka, having previously worked as a "tea tester" for another firm.
Both Jaliya Wickramasuriya and Gotabhaya Rajapaksa were immigrants in the United States when Mahinda Rajapakse was elected President of Sri Lanka in 2005. After being elected, President Mahinda Rajapakse appointed his brother Gothabaya Rajapakse as Defence Secretary of Sri Lanka and his cousin Jaliya Wickremasuriya as Consul General of Sri Lanka in Los Angeles.
Wickramasuriya has launched several new bilateral initiatives between Sri Lanka and the United States. He has also organized multiple trips to Sri Lanka for American companies.
